HOW TO USE THIS WIKI:

You will create several pages on this wiki this semester and I will sometimes use the wiki to communicate and share documents with the class. For the week of September 14, create a personal page and a page to paste your outline into. Follow these instructions to create a page:

  1. Find your name in the table below.
  2. Go to the “EDIT” tab in the upper left hand corner.
  3. Find your name and highlight it.
  4. Go to the “Insert Links” box on the right and click “Insert link to a new page” [Alternately, you can click the small globe icon]
  5. The Link Type should say PBworks page, and --New page--
  6. Name this page using your full name as in “Jack Mitchell” for Jack Mitchell’s page.
  7. Click “Save” at the bottom right. Then click your now underlined name (you might have to go back under the "VIEW" tab to do so).
  8. Name your page—your name should automatically appear as the suggested name. Click “Create page”
  9. You will be taken to your blank page in the Edit tab. You should introduce yourself on this page.
  10. You may choose to upload a picture by going to the “Images and files” tab of the Insert Links box. Click “Upload files”, and drag your image into your page from that list. Resize it by left clicking the photo, and going into the “Image properties” menu where you can alter the height and width.
  11. Always click “Save” in the lower left when you are done Editing a page. You can get back to the front page any time by clicking the upper left where your section number is located.

Over the course of the semester, each student will create one page for each paper draft.  Name the paper pages using this format: “last name”+“first initial”+“assignment number” as in “Mitchell J 1” for draft 1 of Jack Mitchell’s first paper.  Then, after you have written your outline or paper on your own computer using the word processor of your choice, cut-and-paste the text of the paper outline/draft directly to the appropriate wiki page.

Post your outline to the “Outline 1” column by following the same steps as above. You’ll need to first type “last name”+“first initial”+“assignment number” as in “Mitchell J 1” in the appropriate column on this FrontPage, and then go through the numbered steps again.

For peer reviews, you will find your peer group in the table below and then read the drafts of all the other students in your peer review group.  Post a constructive “Comment” to the bottom of each student’s draft page.  Your TA will give your more detailed instructions on this.

While at www.my.pbworks.com be sure to check the box “Notify me when my workspaces change” to “Never” and hit “Submit”

Using the wiki is fun and easy, and once you can do these things, you’ll be an expert!

That sounds good. Also, I was thinking... Since we all had to be in charge of one of the articles, why don't be post 1-5 points about the article that we had to make our speech on so that we can all save time? I'll start mine.

Douglas Rushkoff "Coercion - Arousing Aspiration."
- Summary of the path of advertising tactics till the present day. includes demographics, psychographics, self consciousness etc.
- The advertising tactics changed from representing the quality of the products, to creating an image of the product, to having the product play with the audiences self consciousness and full fill their identity.
- Rushkoff mainly describes those advertising methods but also maintains a criticizing tone of the advertiser's coercions using psychology and self conciousness.

If there's anything else you want to know indepth (if you didn't read the article and whatnot) let me know!!

Schudson's article "Change in Consumer Patterns"

-Exposé on the revolutionary times for females smoking, and how the media's impacts on that process affected it
-Oppression of liberty for females is a testimony to struggles of rights for any group of people in U.S. History
*How media fuels these flames of action and intervention is shaped by the patterns of society
-Causes us to think of who really is controlling media and our thoughts on a macro level, and how indoctrinated we are by the media.
*Poses the question of whether we control the media, or if the media controls us.
-It is wise to assume that both we and the media are a symbiotic pair that control each other, and an imbalance of that is bound to occur, but eventually reaches an equilibrium.
